Discover the Mystery of Gluten

Discover the Mystery

of Gluten

glu·ten

/ˈɡlo͞otn/

noun

Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats.

The Latin word meaning "glue" was given to this protein many years ago due to the glue-like qualities it demonstrated when it was cooked. This sticky quality makes it a great choice for cooking and baking just about anything. For this same reason, it is commonly used as a thickener in many recipes.

However, this sticky quality makes it difficult for some with gluten sensitivity to digest. When this occurs, numerous health problems can begin to develop. It is best for those who have a gluten sensitivity or allergy to cut it out of their diet completely.

For a deeper understanding of the gluten protein please visit the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Because of glutens characteristic of bonding items, it is a favored ingredient in many cooking items. The items listed above may come off as obvious, but there are a handful of consumable products that contain gluten that many have no clue about.

During my personal experience, it was the hidden gluten items that continued to make me feel sick and not see the benefits of living a gluten-free lifestyle.

To fully be gluten free, you must be diligent about avoiding all gluten containing items, including these:

  • Tea Bags

  • Spices

  • Sauces

  • Gums & Mints

  • Some Candy

  • Tooth Paste

With all things, it is important to read the label or research if a certain product is safe to eat. One brand of salad dressing may use flour as a thickener while another brand may have a gluten-free option. Just because an item is listed here does not mean that there aren't gluten-free alternatives for it.

Gluten & Digestion

Depending on the severity of gluten sensitivity, allergy, or celiac disease, each person will experience different side effects as their bodies reaction to gluten exposure.

Celiac Disease is an autoimmune disease, which means the body is attacking its own cells with antibodies. Antibodies are our immune systems natural defense to protect ourselves from any foreign threats that may harm us. For those who have celiac disease, gluten is seen as a threat, and the body releases an antibody called ... to eliminate this threat.

However, these antibodies cause harm to the good cells in the body as well such as the stomach lining, .... etc.

It all starts with the gut. If it is healthy and absorbing nutrition, important vitamins and on these. the other organs can function properly and the body is in balance. However, if the body cannot receive the basic nutrients it needs, other parts of the body begin to function improperly. This is the reason why those with Celiac Disease suffer from multiple different side effect. These side effects include:

  • Anxiety & Depression

  • Mood Swings

  • Joint Pain

  • Rashes & Itchy Skin

  • Bloating, Constipation, Diarrhea

  • Brain Fog

  • Upset Stomach
